An example of descriptive writing which I have for a long time found both very problematic and very fascinating can be read here, esp. the paragraph beginning "The charts of the world..."

Also of interest in this regard is Artaud's treatment of natural signs in the landscape in "Voyage to the Land of the Tarahumara", but that's still under copyright, find a copy & check it out.

That's an ugly sentence. Sad, isn't it, when the sentence is so ugly that its inelegance co-opts the reader's attention?

Sorry, can't see where you're pointing, which sentence?

Anyway, without really knowing what you're talking about it's kind of stupid of me to comment further, but what you're describing sounds to me like a pretty good esthetic effect, so not really sad at all, certainly nothing likely to make me sad, especially if it involves, as you say, inelegance & co-optation, both genuinely fascinating in their own right. Failures of communication tend to strike me as more funny than sad, people hurting each other everywhere all the time, that's sad.

What is for what? Is there some organization dedicated to making vague comments attached to this post?
